The best treat pouches for dog training
So your dog trainer recommended getting a treat pouch, and you’re totally on board. Problem is, you have no idea which one to buy! These days, treat pouches for dog training come in such a variety of colours, shapes, and styles - you might feel overwhelmed choosing one.
As a certified dog trainer, here’s a few brands of treat pouches I recommend to my clients - some I’ve actually used myself, and others I’ve heard good reviews of from other trainers. The most important thing is to select a treat pouch you’ll enjoy using, so you’ll be motivated to bring it with you on your dog’s walks. Go for a pouch that’s comfortable and fits your style!
Wildebeest Alamo Dog Treat Pouch
I love this one for its minimalist, compact design! It comes in a range of stylish colours (I chose olive green). It’s definitely on the smaller side, but holds a good amount of treats, plus has a pocket for a roll of poop bags and your keys.
Pros: Cute enough to wear with your favourite outfit
Cons: Might be too small for long walks
MuttRuk Sidekick Hip Pack
This one might be the mother of all treat pouches. It’s packed with pockets, not only for treats but for your phone, lip balm, hand sanitizer - if you want to bring it on your dog’s walks, chances are it’ll fit in this bag. It also has a built-in poop bag dispenser and a water bottle holder, plus a very convenient carabiner. It’s currently available in four colours.
Pros: Tons of room without being too bulky
Cons: Treats are a bit tough to access from the front pocket - I now use this pocket for storing treats and carry an additional smaller pouch to feed dogs from
Canada Pooch Everything Fanny Pack
Like the name suggests, this is a fanny pack, but with some design touches geared towards dog walking. It has similar features to the Muttruk Sidekick, like a built-in poop bag holder, but at a lower price point. I haven’t personally used this one, but it looks like a good, basic treat pouch that checks a lot of boxes.
Pros: Some convenient features, good price
Cons: Kind of limited variety of styles and colours
Voila Ultimate Treat Pouch
I’ve definitely been coveting this one, but at a whopping $80 I’ll try to wait until my current ones need replacing! Still, this might be the most beautiful treat pouch I’ve ever seen. It’s made of silicone, so you can put wet or raw treats into it and simply clean it with soap and water when it gets too gross. It’s also sealable and has a wide-mouth opening, so you don’t have to dig around for the treats.
Pros: Absolutely gorgeous design, and looks like a high-quality product
Cons: On the pricier side
Honourable mention: Chalk bags
A number of dog walkers/trainers have told me they carry their treats in chalk bags! Originally designed to hold chalk for rock climbers (who use it to dry their sweaty hands and get a better grip), these bags translate well to dog treat storage thanks to their big openings - it’s almost like a small treat bucket that’s attached to you!
Since these don’t always snap closed, just watch out your dog doesn’t try to stick his entire snout in when you’re not paying attention - it’s happened to me before!
